For the Mommas…..

I am all about saving money with coupons. My friends think I am a little strange with my stacks of coupons.  I usually save about 40% on average off of retail pricing.  Why?  How?  When?

Why – I have nothing better to do then sit at my desk cutting coupons and matching them to circulars.  Not to mention, my husband is a mean tyrant and I am secretly saving as much money as I can, so I can run away.   Ok, not really, I just thought it sounded like one of those awful lifetime movies and God knows I love a really bad melodramatic Lifetime movie.   I also like to embarrass my son at the store. He usually tries to hide when I hand the cashier all of my coupons.

How – I don’t have one of those fancy pants systems.   In fact, I wouldn’t even call it a system.   It consists of a crappy pair of dollar store scissors and a subscription to my local newspaper.  The most important part of my system is the 55 gallon container that I have to shove them in when we have company.  I guess 75 coupon circulars stacked on my kitchen counter isn’t the most attractive décor.

When – I am to the point where I spend almost next to nothing on toiletries.  If you are a brand snob, this won’t work for everything.  My husband gets annoyed when he pulls out the white bottle that says in big black letters DEODRNT on it.  He says what is this? I said well I didn’t pay for the O or A.  It isn’t quite that bad, but pretty darn close.  Our toiletries closet is like a box of chocolates, you never know what you are going to get!  There are a few brands I won’t even take if they are free, unless I want to smell like I haven’t showered in a week.    As far as food goes, I don’t always have a coupon for everything, but I do take advantage of stockpiling when I find a good sale. I haven’t bought cereal in months.  Don’t be like my mother and ask me if it’s all expired.  I check the dates first and buy enough so that we will eat it before expires. So if the cereal expires in 6 months and we eat 2 boxes a month, I buy 12 boxes.

Hang out with me for awhile and you might just use a coupon or 60. As the old saying goes, a penny saved, is a penny earned!
